iPhone - Spoiling Personal Relationships

in

Seems that people carrying iPhones, and Blackberry's, and other such super-devices are literally carrying their offices with them. For people whose entire business depends on networking and replying to emails in time, there could be nothing better than one of these gadgets.

However, sometimes these super-humans can be turning-off. At times, I have had to prepare huge word documents, or presentations, or at times nurture an important discussion by compiling a huge email. While I expect the reader to be generous with his/her opinions, all I normally get back is something like, "Great! Tx. Will get back to you." ... or "I like your opinions. Nice." (since these gadgets don't give you a laptop-like writing interface, it's difficult to write more than this) ...

Well, thanks for liking my opinions. If you really like them, have the courtesy to respond with some more matter and, hence, some more substance.

The desire to have things done quickly invariably prevents them from being done thoroughly.

 Update:

Sanjay Kamble, one of the sharpest minds I have come across in the corporate world, has his own views about what he calls the "etiquettes of using a BlackBerry".

The man opines that you need to play the expectation game when dealing with a person who depends on the BlackBerry. Like, don't write long, discussion oriented mails to him/her. Probably, try writing concise mails yourself (as if you were using the super gadget yourself).

He, then, went on to reveal the trump card. I think the suggestion is worth a 100 dimes - and something that all BB owners should heed to. Use GTalk. Using GTalk for all your communicaitons forces the other person to use GTalk as well (which is convenient for this other person as well). The other guy, of course, won't be too descriptive over GTalk himself - GTalk is not meant for that.

Then, GTalk has this wonderful status feature which let's the world know what the BB owner is upto. The best part is, your GTalk remains active even if you go offline - so mesgs sent to the GTalk remain there to be seen later.

The best part of the conversation with Sanjay was that he started discussing about this silly topic initiated by me without a second invitation!

Sanjay, btw, is in Pune volunteering for the Commonwealth Youth Games. Mansi Pingle is also involved with the CYG. Feels good to know people working in the sports management domain!
